New insights into the structural development and shortening of the southern Jasmund Glacitectonic Complex (Rügen, Germany) based on balanced cross sections

Abstract Late Pleistocene glacitectonism at the southern Scandinavian Ice Sheet margin caused folding and thrusting of Upper Cretaceous chalk layers glacial deposits in parts southwestern Baltic Sea area Europe. Beside Møns Klint (SE Denmark), Jasmund Glacitectonic Complex (JGC) on Rügen Island (NE Germany) is a similar striking example glacitectonic deformation creating large composite ridges. In spite long research history new results from modern datasets, structural development JGC still poorly understood, especially detailed evolution its relationship to northern remain enigmatic. this contribution, we demonstrate how understanding benefits application established geological methods comprehending formation fold-and-thrust belts. The include cross-section balancing eastern coast (southern JGC) quantification amount faulting. proposed geometric model shows current stack glacially deformed sedimentary strata ca. 5720 m length evolved by shortening original (11,230 m) 5510 (49.1%). We present spatial temporal fault-related with transition detachment folds through fault-propagation fault-bend folds.
